The Train Station
The Train Station, Jalan Stasion.
The first station was constructed in Bandung in 1884 and served the routes of Batavia – Bandung – Yogyakarta – Surabaya. It was a simple one story building of wood, in the ‘romantic’ style, and was used by no fewer than 1.3 million people per year for about 50 years. In celebration of the 50th year of the state railroad, a newer modern building was constructed in 1926. It was designed in the Art Deco Geometric style with handsome stained glass windows.

The Red Villa
This house was designed by R.L.A Schoemaker to fulfill the housing needs for the professors at the Institute of Technology of Bandung. The building was designed using ballast bricks. As the bricks were not plastered as in the case of most other buildings in Bandung, the house was nicknamed Villa Merah for the red of the exposed brick Schoemaker intended the construction to show that not all brick buildings require a plaster finish to be beautiful.

SAVOY HOMANN HOTEL
Hotel Savoy Homann, Jalan Asia Afrika 112.
Little more than a bamboo hut when the German family named Homann opened their hotel on the Post Road in the 1870s, the hotel was rebuilt after the advent of the railroad to Bandung in 1884. The hotel was rebuilt in a romantic style, completed with exposed timber and intimate verandahs. In 1936, the owner, Van Es., commissioned A.F. Aalbers to redesign the hotel in a style much like the architect’s popular work, the DENIS Bank on Jalan Braga, completed in 1935. Aalbers used an extreme horizontal line to guide the design and a ribbon of balconies line the front of the hotel. A tall tower was placed to break this horizontal plane and porthole windows complete the look that seems almost nautical in effect. It was visited by the likes of Hollywood stars such as Charlie Chaplin, who visited three times, the last time with the actress Paulette Goddard. The hotel was reopened in 1939, but parts of the complex date to the 1920s.

GCT. VAN DORP & CO
Landmark Building, Jalan Braga 131.
Better remembered as the Van Dorp Bookshop, this building was designed by CP. Wolff-Schoemaker in the Indo-European Style. Of particular interest is the inclusion of traditional decorations such as the two giant Kala heads on the façade. It was a favored hangout for Bandung intellectuals and an annual sales volume of some 500,000 gulden per year (when a luxurious villa cost between 8,000 and 10,000 gulden. The building was purchased and re-used as the Landmark Exhibition Center in the 1990s.
